Legislation and regulations

In practising your profession as a dentist, you will be faced with quite a few rules and laws. In order to give you a good impression of the relevant legislation and regulations, we have compiled a brief overview for you. The index does not contain complete texts of legislation, but mostly has short summaries of what the various laws lay down. References to more extensive texts or further background information have also been included.

Individual Health Care Professions Act (wet BIG)
The provision of care by medical professionals is regulated by the Individual Health Care Professions Act (wet BIG which came into force fully on 1 December 1997). The goal of this act is twofold:

    • to promote and monitor the quality of professional practice
    • to protect the patient against incompetent and negligent action by professional practitioners.
